Title: Partners in the Prompt: Co-creating AI Policy and Pedagogy with Students
Presentation Brief
As generative AI reshapes the landscape of higher education, the traditional top-down approach to policy often misses the student perspective. This session explores a collaborative framework for developing AI guidelines that treats students as active partners rather than passive subjects. Professor Demian Hommel shares insights from recent exploration into how students perceive the risks and utilities of these emerging tools. He will discuss the transition from restrictive "policing" to co-created ethics. Attendees will see examples of strategies for bridging the gap between institutional goals and the lived reality of the modern classroom. This is a conversation about trust, transparency, and the future of academic integrity.
Speaker Bio
Demian Hommel, Ph.D., is a Professor of Teaching in Geography and Geospatial Science at Oregon State University. He currently serves as an AI in Teaching and Learning Fellow, focusing on the intersection of emerging technologies and inclusive pedagogy. With extensive experience managing large-enrollment courses, Demian leads research initiatives that investigate student and faculty perceptions of AI and the ethical, environmental, and political-economic implications of its use.
