Creating real solutions and positive impact across Oregon and beyond.
The OSU Division of Extension and Engagement:
- Engages communities in learning, identifying local needs and opportunities and problem-solving.
- Believes in co-creation of innovation, knowledge and expertise.
- Helps connect OSU’s educational programs and resources to all people — wherever and whenever they wish to learn.
The OSU Division of Extension and Engagement
Extension and engagement are core to Oregon State’s mission and integral to work that will achieve the collaborative vision for shared prosperity laid out in the university’s strategic plan.
While multiple Oregon State units undertake outreach and engagement activities, the Division of Extension and Engagement is charged with stewardship for these efforts across the university. Broadly, the division provides collaborative leadership in three complementary areas.
OSU Public Engagement
Building reciprocal, mutually beneficial relationships underpins OSU’s public engagement philosophy. This includes seeking opportunities for greater collaboration and integration across OSU colleges and divisions, while engaging community partners in developing mutually beneficial solutions to real-world issues.
Dr. Marina Denny, Associate Vice Provost for Engagement
OSU Extension Service
OSU Extension engages the people of Oregon with research-based knowledge and education that strengthen communities and economies, sustain natural resources and promote healthy families and individuals. You can find us serving in every county and the Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs, providing information and expertise to help meet local challenges and help every Oregonian thrive — just as we have done for more than 100 years.
Dr. Kristopher Elliott, Interim Director, OSU Extension Service, and Interim Vice Provost, Extension and Engagement
OSU Partnerships
In support of OSU’s priority on educational access, OSU Partnerships help expand connections with community colleges, increase support for transfer students, and develop new programs and initiatives that support college access for underserved students. It also provides leadership and oversight of partnership-driven programs including Open Campus, Juntos and an in-development Native American and Tribal communities program.

Join us at the OSU Engagement Conference
The OSU Engagement Conference offers beneficial insight, ideas, information and networking in all disciplines. Designed for any OSU faculty and staff, as well as community partners, with current or future interest in public engagement and community-engaged scholarship.
Engaged scholarship responds to community needs and is about community partnerships.
If you conduct engaged work that directly benefits community partners while contributing to institutional and academic unit missions, you are conducting community-engaged scholarship. Engaged scholarship can be:
- Research and creative activities
- Teaching and learning
- Service and practice
Our collaborative efforts prepare educated, engaged citizens, address critical societal issues and contribute to the public good. In 2020, OSU received a second Carnegie Community Engagement Classification. This designation recognizes the strength of OSU’s commitment to community engagement and engaged scholarship.
